Dreams of the Wounded Musketeer: Featuring music by Valentini, Bertali, Schmelzer, Rosenmüller, and others

An imperial military trumpeter, a member of the Kameradschaft, has been shot. As he lies dying, the musician-musketeer’s life in Vienna passes before his eyes in a hazy dream. In his fever he recalls the madness of the music of his childhood, as the dissonant seconda prattica swept north of the Alps. He relives the swirling wildness of the stylus phantasticus that shaped the music of his adult years. At the last, flashing back to the battle that shattered him, he ascends to heaven.

Baroque band ACRONYM—an “outstanding young early music string ensemble” (The New Yorker)—is dedicated to giving modern premieres of the wild instrumental music of the seventeenth century.
