SWAN SONGS: LATE WORKS FOR VIOL AND HARPSICHORD
3 April 2016 | Sunday 3:00 p.m.
St. Philip’s In The Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, Arizona
Josh Lee (viola da gamba) and Andrew Appel (harpsichord) present a showcase of the technical and artistic heights of repertoire for these instruments before each was overshadowed by its modern equivalent. The duo will perform works for viol and harpsichord by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, and François Couperin, as well as solos for viol by Abel, and for harpsichord by Duphly and J.C. Bach.
Andrew Appel, Artistic Director of the Four Nations Ensemble, performs throughout Europe and the United States as a harpsichord soloist. Josh Lee’s viol playing has been called “a tour-de-force” (Vancouver Classical). Founder of Ostraka (Tucson performance in 2011), Josh performs with chamber groups and as a soloist for audiences across five continents.
“Appel communicates Couperin’s darker musical moments with sensitivity and elan... Appel plays with theatrical flair.”
–American Record Guide, 2013
“Outstanding... [Lee’s] playing of music by Couperin, Fouqueray and Corrette was flawless and expressive. He played these fiendishly difficult pieces as effortlessly as to make one think that this music was simple to play.”
–San Francisco Examiner, 2010
