About the Program
Recorded at Redpath Hall (Montreal), directed by Lucas Harris
This concert features works by Chiara Margarita Cozzolani (1602–ca.1677), abbess of the convent of Santa Radegonda in Milan. This convent housed one of the most celebrated ensembles of women musicians in early modern Italy. Cozzolani was one of the most prolific nun-composers of her time, publishing four editions of sacred works. She led the abbey at the time that the nuns’ music came under attack from the Milanese archbishop, who wanted to limit the nuns’ practice of music, especially to the extent it brought contact with the outside world.
The lost bass part to her first book of motets was reconstructed by Lucas Harris (theorbo player, musicologist, conductor), and six of the reconstructed motets are presented in this performance.
