Scintilla, Early Italian String Quartets

Musical life throughout the 18th-century was dominated by touring Italian virtuosi. Their music and extroverted showmanship were characterized by gorgeous tone, operatic sensibilities, and brilliant ornamentation. In this program, The Butter Quartet puts Felice Giardini (1716–1796), Maddalena Laura Lombardini Sirmen (1745–1818), Luigi Boccherini (1743–1805), and Gaetano Pugnani (1731–1798) in the spotlight, highlighting the intersections between Baroque virtuosity and the emerging genre of the string quartet.
The Butter Quartet
The Butter Quartet first formed during their studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, but soon developed a passion and dynamic that extended beyond their conservatory years. They have been featured in festivals such as the York Early Music Festival, the Utrecht Early Music Festival, Mozartfest Würzburg, and the Beethoven Academy at the National Forum for Music in Poland. Their performances have also been broadcast on national classical radio in the Netherlands (NPO4), the UK (BBC3), France (France Musique), and Slovenia (RTV Slovenija).
