About the Program
The Transatlantic Salon: String Quartets by Haydn, Sirmen, Bologne, Mozart, and Ximenez

In keeping with the spirit of 18th-century intellectual salons, the musical salon was a place where like-minded people could gather to enjoy performances, conversation, and refreshments. The Transatlantic Salon celebrates music for the string quartet by Joseph Haydn, Maddalena Laura Lombardini Sirmen, Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint-George, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Pedro Ximenez Abrill Tirado, and the creativity that captivated 18th- and 19th-century salon audiences throughout Europe and South America.

About the Ximenez Quartet

Named after 19th-century Peruvian composer Pedro Ximenez Abril Tirado, the Ximenez Quartet was born in the fall of 2019 out of the shared passion for exploring music by lesser-known composers, especially those from the Americas. Montreal-based Karin Cuéllar (Bolivia), Simon Alexandre (Canada), Jimin Dobson (Canada), and Jessica Korotkin (USA) have made it their mission to bring this repertoire to the concert platform in a sensitive, historically informed, and contextualized manner that seeks to place this music on equal terms with that of the canonic, mostly Eurocentered repertoire. The Ximenez Quartet debuted at the Montreal Baroque Festival, has appeared in the participated in the XIII Festival Internacional de Música Barroca y Renacentista Misiones de Chiquitos in Bolivia, and was selected for Early Music America’s 2022 Emerging Artist Showcase.
